Over the years I’ve photographed many little girls in their first communion dresses and it’s one of my favorite milestones to photograph. Maybe I like it so much because I can remember my own First Communion and how special it felt to be all dressed up in that white dress and veil (If I can find the portrait I will post it). I remember my mom wrapping me up in a white sheet before I got into the car to ensure the dress remained white until we got to the church. I’ve always understood what an important moment it was for me. But, with my son making his first communion this year, it’s really sunk in how important this moment is to a parent. It’s one of the few formal events until graduation and marriage. It’s your baby taking another step towards adulthood. I also have a better understanding of why these portraits are so important for both the child and parent. On the day of the communion don’t you want to be a spectator and a part of the event and not running around trying to get “the shot”? Once you have that formal portrait in the bag, you can relax and not think about pictures on the actual day of the event. If you still feel like taking pictures, the pressure will be off,  so just carry your point and shoot camera. The beauty of a mother anticipating the arrival of her child is like no other time I photograph. There is such a sense of elation and suspense; it’s absolutely the most serene of all my sessions. I usually shoot these sessions in my clients home because I feel that this is where it is most comfortable for them. It’s also wonderful for a couple to have images that show what their life was like at the time their baby came to be a part of their family. This is also particularly true if we’re going to do anything in less than a fully clothed state (that’s my PC way of saying naked). Cleveland weather is also a factor here so when the weather permits there’s something about being outside. Taking that natural beauty of a woman who’s ready to bring new life into the world and placing her in the heavenly outdoors can be simply awe-inspiring. All that being said, I really like to keep maternity sessions very simple and capture the moment in a way that allows the miracle to speak for itself. Pregnancy doesn’t require anything “else” to be present in a photograph to help tell it’s story.

Mother’s Day is coming up–hint, hint!!

What better way to show your family in their “element” than to have photos taken in your home. It’s such a reflection of who you are as a family and your style. This style of modern family photography is what I enjoy doing the most. Gone are the days of stiff studio portraits–thank goodness! This is WAY more fun and real to me. And have I mentioned how much I love to do one year portraits?! Love, love, love them! They’re so happy and full of personality and ready to explore the world. This little guy was no different. He had me at hello with this big brown eyes. I love capturing these milestone memories they’ll have forever.

Thirteen years ago today I opened my photography studio in Rocky River, Ohio. At that time I was shooting only black-and-white film. Today, digital photography has made it much easier to start a photography business. It’s a saturated market. I think it’s my love and passion for photographing children that has kept me going. I don’t think I could have made it this far without that love. I get emails and calls all the time from aspiring photographers asking me how I made it this far. It’s really the obsession that keeps me going. This is not a 9-5 job. Having a photography business is 80% business and 20% photography so you have to been committed to the business end of things as well. There are lots of behind the scenes work that is involved. Just answering phone calls and responding to emails is a big part of my day. There’s also scheduling sessions, traveling to and from sessions, book keeping, accounting, insurance, legal, marketing, backing up images, editing images, prepping orders, packaging, shipping orders/delivering orders, researching new products, software and computer updates, web site and blog updates. Some of this stuff I absolutely hate doing, like book keeping and accounting—ugh, yuck! I wish I could say, “sorry, that’s not in my job description.” But, unfortunately, it IS when you own your own photography business. You must wear many hats.

So what makes me different and why should you hire me over someone else?

Experience. Experience. Experience. Oh, and did I say Experience.

I am not only writing this to say you should hire me (though of course you should—a duh) but to remind you to hire someone with experience when it comes to your precious little ones. These moments won’t happen again. There are no retakes when it comes to your newborn. Don’t look back with regret. Make the right choice from the start and you will not only have a wonderful photography experience, but gorgeous art for your walls of your own child that you will look back on for years to come.  So now, without further ado…
